Join us in worship on the Wednesdays of Lent as we look to the book of Job to consider what it means to keep the faith in challenging times. Our musicians, Brian Priebe, Toku Kawata, Keturah Kiehl, Lori Schwartz, and Nancy Dydak lead us in worship.

A TRANSFIGURATION DEVOTION FROM PASTOR MIKE:
Richard Wilbur, more than 50 years ago, wrote a poem called “Plain Song for Comadre” about a woman who cleans a church.
…it is seventeen years
Come tomorrow
That Bruna Sandoval has kept the church
Of San Ysidro, sweeping
and scrubbing the aisles, keeping
The candlesticks and the plaster faces bright
And seen no visions but the thing done right…
————————————————————————
There are some jobs we do, over the course of our lives, that come with little recognition. Bruna’s work was like that. And yet, in sweeping and cleaning, she met Jesus.
Today we have the story of a vision, the story of the Transfiguration, it is a moment so mystical and so otherworldly, it is hard to come to grips with. Sure, the gospels are filled with miracles, and holy moments, but the Transfiguration is something different..
Like Peter, we may want to get our hands on it, to understand it more concretely. Or we may want Jesus to remain, like this in all he does. But it is a snapshot, an instant, a revelation, fleeting. Jesus has yet more “ordinary” work to do.
It’s funny though. John, one of the three who was there on the mountain, does not include the Transfiguration in his gospel.
Maybe he felt the other gospel writers had said enough. Or maybe, John decided, to weave Transfiguration throughout his writing.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. (John 1)
This is good news for us today. In the ordinary, the mundane, the regular activities of our lives, even stuck home amid a Pandemic, Jesus is there, all of him, the ordinary and transcendent. “God With Us” has come true. Have you noticed him with you today?

…For love and in all weathers
This is what she has done.
Sometimes the early sun
Shines as she flings the scrubwater out, with a crash
Of grimy rainbows
And the stained suds flash
Like angel-feathers.
