A Prayer Mediation for All Saints’ Day
Today, November 1st is the annual Feast Day of All Saints in the Christian Church. All Saints’ Day, or The Solemnity of All Saints is a Christian festival honoring the faithful departed, known and unknown. We will also be observing All Saints’ Day in our worship service this Sunday, with an opportunity to light a candle in memory of loved ones.
A Prayer Meditation for All Saints’ Day:
We give you thanks, O God, for the saints who’ve come before us
Worshipers all; some free, some persecuted harshly.
Whether in quiet wooded places or elaborate cathedrals,
Weathered wooden chapels or crumbling cement meeting houses
Where your name was lifted and adored.
We thank you, God, for hardworking laborers;
Whether dress adorned or steel-booted,
Head ragged or top-hatted,
Blue-collared or three-piece-suited
They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.
We give you thanks, O God, for faithful sacrifices:
Food given to fill the hungry,
Clothing knit to warm the bare.
The generosity of your saints a witness to a giving God.
May our gifts also serve your people.
Thank you, God, for the work and faithful witness of those who have come before us,
Bless the memories of your saints.
May we emulate their greatest qualities, learning from their mistakes,
Always knowing that we like they, are sustained by your loving-kindness.
Teach us to honor their memories well,
That we learn to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.
~Pastor Mike Middaugh
